The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, under Professor Tom Meyer’s leadership, was selected to receive a prestigious five year Energy Frontiers Research Center (EFRC) grant.  One of only 46 EFRCs funded by the Department of Energy and President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the “Solar Fuels and Next Generation Photovoltaics EFRC” at Carolina will focus on innovative interdisciplinary research, including the synthesis of new molecular catalysts and light absorbers and integration into nanoscale architectures for improved generation of fuels and electricity from sunlight.  The Carolina led EFRC will involve over 20 faculty and include collaborations with scientists at Duke University, University of Florida, North Carolina Central University, and North Carolina State University.  The center will support a mix of about 30 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. It will become a central part of the newly formed Solar Energy Research Center (SERC).

The EFRC will be housed initially within the Institute for Advanced Materials, Nanoscience and Technology (IAM) at Carolina.

January 15-17, 2009  SERC holds first annual Solar Energy Symposium

The new UNC Solar Energy  Research Center, housed within IAM, positions UNC to be a leader in creating a sustainable energy future by coordinating and leading a research focus on solar fuels and next-generation organic and hybrid photovoltaics. The Conference, sponsored by SERC and RTEC, featured 14 prominent research and policy experts in the field, including Nate Lewis (CalTech) as a keynote speaker. Prof. Lewis also presented an Inorganic talk on 'Sunlight-Driven Hydrogen Formation by Membrane-Supported Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting'.

North Carolina Biotechnology Center will hold a half-day symposium on Intellectual Property, entitled Reduction to Practice: Intellectual Property in the Life Sciences, on September 10, 2009 from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm. This symposium is designed for academic and industry scientists, entrepreneurs, technology transfer professionals and others working in the life sciences.

Presentations and panel discussions will focus on the basics of IP (particularly patents), freedom-to-operate, infringement and strategic IP protection. The session will conclude with a case study presented by a local life sciences company (Advanced Liquid Logic) on its approach to crafting an extensive and meaningful IP estate.

There is no charge for attending this event; however, registration is required as space is limited. Lunch will be provided. Please click on the link  to view the program agenda and to register for this event:
