The Solar Energy Research Center has announced its second annual symposium, "Solar Fuels and Energy Storage: The Unmet Needs" to be held on January 14-16, 2010 on the UNC Campus. A list of conference speakers may be found online and details will be updated regularly as plans are finalized.
Photovoltaic, solar thermal, and wind are excellent renewable sources of electrical power, but they are all intermittent. Without large scale energy storage capabilities, these technologies will struggle to replace fossil fuel and halt global warming. This Symposium will lay out the needs, review current technology efforts to meet them, particularly state-of-the-art efforts in solar fuels (e.g., hydrogen from splitting water, or methanol or hydrocarbons from water and CO2 - systems that can also replace petroleum in transportation) and discuss other changes needed to meet the challenge.
